“Making First Impression” 5 Tips for Newbie Teachers

Being a newbie teacher doesn’t just require your skills in teaching. One of the important things that you need is a stress free environment, since teaching itself is already a lot of work to do. You have to create a comfort zone in a new world. To make it possible what you need is to blend in with your co-teachers. You might say “What for? I can do it anyway without others help!” . Well that was your boastful self talking. You’ve graduated with flying colors. okey okey… clap clap.. You have experienced so many victories during college years, but college is over and this is your now. To survive a day in this loaded job, a harmonious working environment is first on the list. Always remember, “No man is an Island”.

Here are 5 tips on surviving the first year of teaching.

1. Always smile.

Yes you are shy, but keep in mind that a smile lightens up the mood. It produces a positive aura not only to those who sees it, but also to you.

Give a smile to everyone you meet. From the gate to the corridors and of course inside your classroom.  It’s for free so share it.

2. Observe.

“When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know; but when you will listen, you may learn something new.” –Dalai Lama

As a newbie you are creating an impression. In creating an impression, never under estimate the power of HUSHED. If you can’t avoid gossips and gossipers, then just keep your mouth shut. They said, “Less talk, less mistake”. It’s true.

3. Avoid complaining (As much as possible)

It seems like you were given a heavy load? Open your eyes. Look around you. Soon you’ll find out that most of the teachers are juggling a lot of coordinatorship than you are. They’re the assets of the school. They are more experienced compared to you, but why give you the task instead? Exactly, they saw your potentials and believed that you are qualified to be one of the important characters of the school’s improvement plan.

These tasks are your chance to grow, develop new skills and widen your horizon. Give your best shot and enjoy. After experiencing alot of task you’ll now have the chance to give the task to others for them to grow.

4. Have friends to keep.

“You can freely smile to everyone, but friendship is for the chosen one” – Creda Sebastiana

You can’t please them all, so you don’t need to be friends with everyone. Surround yourself with just a few but trusted friends.

These trusted friends will be your circle of comfort. They are your pockets of good memories in a busy world. Having friends at work that you are comfortable to share your thoughts and ideas will give you confidence to dance in the rain.

 5. Be humble.

During simple conversations, you are so excited to tell everyone about your glorious past to gain respect. Don’t do it.  Restrain yourself talking about you.  It sounds more like bragging if you do. Unless they asked you.

Don’t tell them, show them. Let your actions and accomplishments roar out that you’re a lion in this field.

“But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when the man who invited you comes, he will say to you, Friend, go on up higher. Then you will have honor in front of all your fellow guests.” – Luke 14:10

I’m sharing this not because I had good memories of my first year in teaching. It is actually more on wishing I had read tips like what I wrote here. Experience is the best teacher, but reading will take you to places you have never been. Hoping that these tips could help you to be the best teacher you can be.

“Wag mamili ng trabaho. Kapag may pinagawa, go lang. Most importantly, wag mahihiyang magtanong” Shirley R. Parreño( Teacher in private school for 8 years and 10 years in public school up to present.)

“Go with the flow. Kung ano ang advise ng depEd , iyon ang sundin.”Evelyn P. Amorsolo(Teacher in public school for 26 years up to present. )

“Noong ako kasi
Nag-oobserve ako sa galawan ng mga kasamahan ko
Nakikinig sa mga old teachers.
Just enjoy teaching.”
Cheloubel B. Badayos (Teacher in public school for 8 years up to present.

“Kabalo.makisama… Be humble kag ask advice, seek help sa mga na una sa imo…“- Teacher sheen (Teacher in public school for 4 years up to present.)

Cherry’s Classroom

Yes Cherry is my name and I am a teacher by profession.

So I would love to share to you my experiences as a public school teacher in the Philipines for more than 10years and counting.

I am excited to blog my personal lesson plans, modules, classroom activities even my own made test papers. The visual aids I am using are mostly DIYs since I am from a third world country and multi media is not qualified to our budget.

Teaching is my calling. It was God’s plan that I am in this field. To teach academics and most of all to carve people into a good person, useful in our society. Since I would be leaving Philippines soon and move to the country of the man of my dreams, blogging is my new way of teaching. This time , I will be teaching not only the young minds, but also I would be able to reach their parents and oh the teachers aswell. In this classroom setting, I wont be paid as much as my salary as a teacher 2, but the experience and the fulfilment is more than enough. May the Lord God guide me on this path.

Roman12:6-7

6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;

I’ll be right back!
